Posted - Aug 21 2008 : 07:06:57 AM Okay I've been aticipating this game for a few months and i was excited here of the demo being released. Its finally here and I can say with a big smile that it was well worth the weight. This game looks and feels great, its stylish and badass at the same time. The controls are simple enough to understand but there is a tutorial on how to use the force grip(the power that allows u to levitate and throw things). This demo takes place at the tie-fighter construction facility, I believe it is StarKiller's first mission. There you face off against clone troopers and a boss which I will not identify. Now the developers wanted us the players to feel like a bunch of badasses when using the force and based on what was available in the demo they've accomplished that. As StarKiller you have to force grip that I mentioned earlier, force lighting and force push. These available powers work smoothly and are balst to use, you can combine them for more stylish kills as well as bonuses. For example you can use the force grip(Right Trigger) to pick up a container, zap with Force Lighting(Y) and then send it flying at a group of clone trooper with force push(B) for a bonus and an alternate fun way to kill them. Same can be down on enemies as well. The Force grip and Force push can be utilized other ways as well, as most of probably know from seing clips and vids of the game. You can use force push to blast open locked doors and with force grip you can use to unlock doors that can't be force pushed open. These door will special outer locks(Huge locks) that can be moved to unlock the door. Its a very clever way to use the force.
Fortunately using the force isn't the only thing that makes you a badass in this demo. Ultilizing your lightsaber is crazy fun, the apprentice's attacks are lightning quick, aggresive and devasting. Th animations for his attacks are very well done as well as the character animations. StarKiller is opened up to a few devastating combos with the lightsaber alone but there are also a few more that you see when combining with your force powers. Hitting force lighting during a lightsaber combo and your saber will become engulfed in electricity for a bigger bonus. You can also combine your attacks with force push to either send your enemies flying away or into the air. It all works so smoothly its amazing.
There's a lock on system that can get a lil tricky but it mostly works, and there were no noticeble camera angle hiccups. Speakign of camera, pressing up on the d-pad will active the action camera which zooms in on well the action. For example I used force grip and push to send a trooper over the ledge to fall to his doom and then i hit up on the pad and the cam switch to the poor guy falling to his doom in a tru cinematic style its was really cool.
The graphics are very good and the music and sound effects does a good job adding to the star wars atmoshpere. I can't wait to get this game.
Verdict: Hardcore Fans of the franchise will love this game, ppl like me who are into star wars a lot but would never be caught dead wearing a wookie outfit will still love it and shud buy this game when it is released and non star wars fans who like action games shud rent first.

Posted - Sep 15 2008 : 10:11:33 AM im not sure it will be a letdown if your a star wars fan but i can see it being great fun and the opportunity to tweak your lightsabre and so on will have re playability value i think this game will be amazing the reviewers negative points just seem stupid it would be a ridiculously easy game if you stroked a storm trooper with your sabre and they fell in half haha and then everyone would complain that its too easy |

Posted - Sep 15 2008 : 06:41:59 AM I just watched the review over at Gametrailers and they gave it pretty much the same as IGN, at a 6.9. The biggest letdowns they pointed out were the QTE's, the shortness of the game (6 - 7 hours), and the enemies (i.e. why can your lightsaber cut through an AT-ST but you have to hit a stormtrooper 5 times with it to kill him?). Oh yeah, and no multiplayer (I can't believe I'm going to have to play this game on my son's Wii to have 1-on-1 lightsaber battles).
Looks like a good rental but I'm not sure there's enough there to warrant a purchase...if only it had multiplayer.
Oh, and I did read the Force Unleashed graphic novel (I probably shouldn't have done that before playing the game though) and it's very good. I can give it a high recommendation to all, but play the game through first as it does contain the plot line of the entire game. |

Posted - Aug 22 2008 : 11:12:08 AM I didn't lock on once and never felt the need to. I wouldn't give the demo a 9/10 because it was just way too short, but it was a lot of fun. |

Posted - Aug 22 2008 : 11:01:42 AM actually they can die from ricochet blaster fire i've seen it happen, i love when let the troopers hang in the air long enough they steady themselves and take a shot at you. |

Posted - Aug 22 2008 : 09:33:39 AM My main beef with the demo was the battle with the AT-ST. I tried force chucking a dozen or so barrels/crates/whatever at it and these would just knock it back, I still needed to do the lame button combo to take it down, for that matter if I can pick up a TIE fighter or bomber in the hanger I should have been able to pick up the AT-ST and toss it over the edge.
All in all it was enjoyable, I can see a lot of potential for a variety of ways to do get the same enemy or attain the same goal (what I loves most about Bioshock) but the limitations, especially that AT-ST battle mean I will probably wait till I can get it for less than full price before I pick it up. |

Posted - Aug 22 2008 : 08:42:56 AM Well... I actually liked it! The Force powers were super to wield, but I found myself running up to everyone and sabering them instead. I don't know why... guess just a habit from many, many previous Star Wars games. I definitely need to play it some more to even begin to get good at it. I did find the camera angle a bit awkward at times. I definitely liked the map in the corner of the screen.
The button pushing sequence at the end was just lame --- let us kick a$$ and finish the fight. That's about the only disappoinment I had with it.
One thing I loved from a previous Star Wars game (Jedi Power Battles on the PS1), was how if you timed a lightsaber block from a blaster, it would ricochet back to the shooter and kill them. I really wish that was in this, but oh well.
A 9/10 from me! |

Posted - Aug 22 2008 : 06:21:40 AM This game was better when it was called Psi-Ops on Xbox 1.
100% rent. Another substandard Star Wars game. |

I think they did that so it could sell to a larger audience. And to keep in touch with "tradition".
Have you ever seen a Star Wars game rated M and will you ever see one? |

Posted - Aug 22 2008 : 02:31:06 AM AAAAAAAHHHHHHH TIMED BUTTON SEQUENCES!!!!!! DIEDIEDIEDIEDIE!!!!
I'm actually pretty unimpressed with the demo. Like muffinstuffer said, fine control of force grip is pretty damn awkward. thankfully, it there are enemies in the room, the thing auto aims. This is a double edge sword... it makes it really easy to clear a room just by flinging stuff left and right... but if the game devolves to this, it could get real boring real quick. Lighting was me, force push was fun. melee just felt superfluous. whether I was just using timed combos, adding force lightning, or throwing in a force push, it didn't feel like there was much difference between them... also... it's a light saber for christ sakes... would it be too much to ask to slice people in half (too much NG2 perhaps?).
Also, I found the camera to be kinda wonky, and generally unhelpful... same with the targeting system... it was always grabbing the wrong item... which I suppose is kinda unavoidable since there were so many things to t hrow around.
I did however like the thing with the girders and tie fighters. |

Seems like the full game might be worth a look, but I found the Force grip very awkward when trying to grab a box or something in the heat of battle and then trying to throw it at a group of stormtroopers. Maybe it just needs a bit more practise.
Yeah I felt the same way at first, but it was a lot more enjoyable when I got the hang of it. |

Posted - Aug 21 2008 : 9:15:05 PM The demo was awesome. I loved the destruction and the glass looked cool when you break it in the tutorial.
The demo was short, sweet, full of badassary, and because of its shortness it made me want the game even more.
*Spoiler* The coolest part was when you had the tie fighters flying by you and you could take the support beams and bend it outwards so the tie fighters could crash into. After I bent all three of them, I heard over the com "Our structure is failing." or something similar to that. |

Posted - Aug 21 2008 : 12:02:36 PM *ahem*... yet another question...
I never really liked the jedi knight series, but one of the things I did like was how with force grip, if you held a guy in the air long enough... *crick* their neck would snap... did they keep that in Force Unleashed? |
