Publisher: Harmonix/Red Octane
ESRB Rating: Teen

Guitar Hero 2 has finally arrived on the Xbox 360 and only after a few days on store shelves it is turning into one of the best games on the system. The game just rocks! The game offers up plenty of tracks to choose from. Ranging from classic rock to modern rock there is a little something for everybody with this game. There are also four difficulty levels to choose from so the game is very accessible to newcomers as well as Guitar Hero veterans. There is also added replay value with the Xbox 360 version. This comes in the form of achievements and future downloadable content. The achievements make you want to beat the game on all the difficulty settings and earn the highest possible score and rating for each song. There will also be songs released on the Xbox Live Marketplace in the future to add to the replay value. The gameplay is the same as the Playstation 2 versions and has not been changed. The co-op play is also included. Sadly the co-op play is not yet available to be played over Xbox Live. It is rumored that online play may be added in a future update though. The X-Plorer guitar controller feels great and is very responsive. I was amazed how fast my fingers were working in some of the songs and also how the controller kept up as well. The guitar controller also features a slot for your headset, which is a nice touch. There is also another connection port on the controller for future expansions such as pedals. Guitar Hero 2 is probably the most fun I've had with my Xbox 360 so far.

Pros:
Great variety of music.
X-Plorer controller is very well made.
Added replay value with achievements and downloadable content

Cons:
No online play as of yet.
The game is not cheap($89.99 for the single player bundle)
Getting 84% of the way through Freebird only to fail the song. ;)

This game just rocks and should not be missed.

I am very much enjoying the game. Too much in fact as I have not been as focused on other things. I would want online play as I don't have anyone to play at home with since my husband has absolutely no interest in playing it. For some reason, he just refuses to join me for any gaming. For me it is my way to unwind as I am busy between working full time and going to graduate school full time.

I have about 50 friends on my friends list who have GHII and it would be great to play them online. I suck at shooting games and don't find them to be fun online at least for me. I'm sure the Timmy who is killing me whenever I respawn is having a blast. I like to play sports games online like Madden.

Nice Review! Its a bummer that there isn't online multiplayer but there would probably be a whole bunch of lag if they tried it. I happened to get one of the broken guitars but the only thing that doesn't work is the whammy bar luckily. One last thing the price of the dowloadable content is ridiculous.

Yeah about the price of DLC i heard that if you wanted to buy all the songs it is about $100 (I assume USD).

whoa.... that.is.one.of.the.greatest.ideas.ever.period.

Heads up, you rack up points faster when you use the whammy bar every time you hold a note.

I am considering getting another guitar and painting it. It's been a while since I have done airbrush work, and I think I have found a way to knock the rust off.

To add to the whammy bar thing, I only use it on star notes to drive the star power up faster. Other than that it sits there.

***EDIT***
Has anyone glanced at the price for the DLC for GH2? Holy Crap Expensive!

The asking price for older songs, in packs, just made me regret buying the game to begin with.

Yeah, who is the tool? :P Heh.

Kidding.

anyway, I think the broken guitar thing was a bit over-stated, I actually haven't had any problem with mine whatsoever.

however, I am really considering getting another guitar for the game.

I just want to say that this is my first post. Ok, now that that is out of the way.

I am not in the least disappointed in this game. I was lucky enough to get one with a non broken guitar. I too thought that online game play was available right away, but if happens or not, it will not detract from the awesomeness that is this game.

If GH3 does land this fall, I will be in line to buy it on day one. To me this is one of the franchises that will really live on and only get better.

Nice rambling 1st post. I feel like a tool now. :)

You will still need the guitar controller. It will be the same was it was with the PS2 versions. They will release a bundle and stand-alone version of Guitar Hero 3. Besides "Fall" generally means between late October through mid-November when it comes to video games. So that is at least a half a year off.

They have said that online play might be coming in a patch. The Pro Face-Off mode, unlocked when you beat the tour on medium would be weird online since your opponent could easily distract you by yelling into their headset. That might not work that well online. You could still do the same thing to them if they were in the same room or you could also smack their guitar out of their hands if you wanted to be a jerk. However online co-op play would add a lot to the game in my opinion. To get all the co-op achievements you would have to do them twice if your friend and you both wanted them. Or you'd have to have two guitars. Online you could both get them at the same time. Maybe they think that will take away from the replay value. Maybe they want you to have to get them twice. Regardless the game is a blast. I'd just like the co-op to be online for the same reason Fatty Chubs wants it to be online, so I can play with people I would never get to play with in the same room. I have friends that have the game but they are on the other side of the country.

Mr. Achievement: Practice > Trogdor > Normal > GTR(sic) Solo.

you'll be doing the hammer ons/offs like a pro in no time.
Mr Achievement Posted - Apr 10 2007 : 8:12:51 PM
The lack of online play is a HUGE draw back for me... I mean 280 Gamerscore requires 2 Guitars with 2 Skilled Players in the same house... That alone really upsets me and drags down the rating for me... I really was under the impression when I spent my $96 that I would be able to play Co-op over XBL... Guess I didn't so enough research!

The rest of the game is great. I am still new to it so the Hammer-Ons and Pull-Offs are still giving me troubles but I will get it... Hopefully... Fun Game, not for everyone...

Good review. I wouldn't mind online play, give me a chance to do co-op with some people I wouldn't be able to play locally. I wouldn't use it as much as gears of war, but I think I would use it to play with ChangeAgent or others.

I've thought about it a bit... and to be perfectly honest with you... I do not see how online play would benefit this game. It's one thing if you're fragging friends, or slip-streaming your study mate, but the thing is that, with guitar hero, while it's competitive, it's kind of about being idiots, or being bad, and being there to congratulate, or humiliate your opponent/bass player. Without their physical presence, I have a hard time imaging Guitar Hero to hold nearly as much magic as it does with all your friends lined up to play (said the guy who has all of about 4 friends…). I could possibly imagine it working in conjunction with the camera… but otherwise… eh… I don’t think we’re really missing out.
