Posted - Sep 19 2009 : 01:14:39 AM Would it be possible to have a mobile version of the forums?
I like the mobile version of the blog and watcher comments, and will browse through them while away from the house. I would love the same access to the forums.
Now, this may be some major undertaking that just isn't worth it, but I thought it would be worth bringing up.
Thanks. |

Manufacturer doesn't really have anything to do with the browser, as IE and Opera are full third party. I use an HTC. Which is the manufacturer of the mytouch (actually, the manufacturer of a large protion of the smartphone market).
One example would be when using the "Active Topics" option, in both Opera and IE, the ability to choose active since when is available, but off to the side of the forums and routinely doesn't actually do anything when you change it as it will default back to "since last visit."
Futiles - have you tried Skyfire? It's another WinMo compatible browser - I use it on my HTC Kaiser/TyTN II (ATT Tilt) and I have no problem accessing the 360v Site/Forums while mobile. Skyfire uses server-side rendering, so what you see is the web as you know it, but the browser isn't directly interpreting the page. In any event it is an effective and capable brower - I have no trouble with forums, media sites, downloading files, etc. Since Skyfire uses server-side rendering, you also don't need any plug-ins for the browser to play media / access flash-based content.
Skyfire certainly isn't perfect, but I like it more than any of the other options out there right now. http://www.skyfire.com |

I assume Android uses some version of Chrome, much like the iPhone uses a mobile version of Safari.
Both the Android browser and the iPhone browser (AKA "Mobile Safari") are based on WebKit, IIRC the Palm Pre uses it as well. They are essentially the same capabilities wise.
I think some more mobile features would be good though, even on my T-Mobile G1 (Android) on 3G or even over WiFi the main site takes a while to load and doesn't look that good on the small screen.
Would love to be able to microblog using a page designed for mobile devices. |

This is correct. The site displays well on the phone, looks just like the PC version. |

It appears to correct any of the alignment issues I've experienced using previous versions of Opera Mobile and IE Mobile.
However, it seems to have it's own quirks. Just figured I'd share, if anyone else was having issues.
Works great in Google Andriod... |

Posted - Sep 19 2009 : 06:46:05 AM A mobile version of the forums would be a nice thing. When I'm browsing the site with my phone or iPod touch, I really don't care about images or anything. |

I would have thought that with smart phones being so common this wouldn't be necessary. Most smart phones come with a full web browser now. No real need for mobile websites.
I actually use a smart phone, even with IE or Opera, the amount of frames and images really are not friendly to a smartphone. Take a look at sites like facebook, the mobile version doesn't have to be nearly as stripped down as the blogs are here, but really can be designed differently to take advantage of the features of a smartphone and avoid pitfalls associated with them.
And they aren't really "full" web browsers. They are more basic mobile versions of common browsers, with unique features and code. |
