I went to an arcade at the Casino here in CT and, well, not too impressed.. Remember when arcades were HUGE?? and you had to put your quarter on the glass so you can be next in line to play mortal kombat or some crazy ass game??

I seriously think, since 360 and PS have been out, arcades went completely downhill...

Or am I wrong? Are there any good arcades anymore??

Hah I love the Boardwalk.. I grew up in San Jose before moving to Morgan Hill... I was at Golfland a few months ago. Played a round of mini-golf, and did some gaming with the girlfriend. We did some skee ball, hoops, Mario Kart arcade, and some pinball. We got a bunch of tickets and bought crap-o-la.. I did get this rad "shocking" pen though. I got everyone at work with it the next day.. lol. Awesome..

It's the spiritual successor to Hydro Thunder. I chat on occasion with Steve Ranck (The head of Specular Interactive, previously the developer of Hydro Thunder & Metal Arms) and I have been really wanting to try the game to give him my impressions but I have had no luck. We have out share of the "Dave & Buster's", "Red & Jerry's", "Mr. Big's" & "It's" locations in the Colorado Springs / Denver area - but I can't really consider those traditional arcades - more of an entertainment location that happens to have some arcade machines.

Arcades in recent times have become worn our shells, nowhere close to being reminiscent of their former glory and spectacle. Small locations, limited selection, high prices - it's the general decline / decay of the industry due interest redirected toward consoles over arcade systems. It's one of the reasons I collect arcade systems along with my console and handhelds. I've got upright coin-ops of Ms. Pac-Man (in a Pac-Man cabinet), Gaplus (Galaga 3), Asteroids, Battlezone and a cocktail Pac-man table that currently plays Arkanoid.

Side note and surprising well timed on topic add... Major Nelson just tweeted: "A new arcade (remember those?) Is opening up near the MS Campus. I'll need to to check it out this weekend: http://bit.ly/3J0Njt"

There was one in Boulder, CO when I lived there. It had a super lame name like "Happy Times" but it was really well equipped. My sister took me there for my birthday one time. I didn't have a lot of friends that year...

The last time I've been to an arcade though, came a year ago when I visited friends in Portland, OR and they took me to a place called Control Room despite the fact that Portland has more bars and strip clubs per capita than any other city. That place didn't even have a Silent Scope.

It would be so packed on Saturdays, you could hardly get through the crowd at the front who were gathered around the hot, new machine... much less find a machine to actually play on. Take Five now consists of about 7 video games, a DDR, and the rest of it is ticket redemption. No pins at all.

It saddens me everytime I walk by or step in. Lot of good memories in that place and I sure hate watching it die.

There's a Tilt at the Oglethorpe Mall in Savannah. There's a Dave & Busters at Discover Mills in Lawrenceville. Those are the arcades I've been in recently.

Sadly this trend is happening everywhere, it has probably been almost 10 years since I have even seen a arcade. I used to have 3 or 4 in my city that I used to hang out at a lot but they died out in the mid 90's.

Columbus does have a pretty decent arcade scene. Back around 2000-2001, I was down there about once a month for competitive DDR and to meet up with friends I had there. I've been to the GameWorks as a group of us would just use a friend's game card on the ladies' night they would host. It sucked playing DDR when I was there, though, as a live band stepped on to the stage the absolute second I started playing and the stage was directly next to the cabinet. At least the location had a Sports Jam at the time.

We spent most of our time at the Magic Mountain locations, mostly due to the DDR competitions. One of them had a Battletoads machine, though, so that was a must-play.

Coincidentally, the world premier of Golden Tee 2010 is being held this Thursday in Ohio - Mansfield to be exact.

Here in Columbus, OH we have Dave & Busters as well as a Game Works (I mean seriously, 2 story arcade + food + drinking?! AWESOME). I haven't been there nearly as much as I wanted to be (due to the whole non-driving thing) think the last time I was at GW was the night that Pirates 3 launched with Syn... hrm... then there's arcades down at Kings Island which I was just at 2 wks ago... neatest new arcade? Deal or No Deal... spitting out up to 200 tickets.... worse? Guitar Hero arcade... yay you get to play A song for your $1

Was that the one across from NYNY, with the giant Coke Bottle & M&M Store? That would be a real shame, must have closed right after my last visit.

Yep that was it. Supposedly they were going to reopen somewhere else but after 2 years it doesn't look like it.

I just went to their website and it looks like they did rebuild it next to the MGM. Which would be the same building. I wonder if they just remodeled the place then. I went there 2 years ago and they had a sign saying they had closed. I need to check it out and see if it is the same place then.

Arcades aren't dead at all if you know where to look, but, then again, depending on where you live, a lot of travel might be involved. I even talk to some studios that are in the middle of developing new arcade games - you'd be surprised what's going on. I guess it also helps that I constantly follow Japanese gaming news so maybe that's why in my mind arcades aren't as dead as others think they are.

Late 80's. It was called The Castle and it was on International Drive in Orlando next to Malibu Grand Prix. 5 bucks would get me 30 tokens, I'd be there from noon until around 10 at night and I'd still have tokens left when I got out of there. Ahh...good times...

I've been in the Circus Circus and the MGM arcades in the late 90's but they didn't have the same atmosphere that I remembered. Remember the the lines behind Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat? Where everybody was trying to beat that one guy that would play for hours on end with just 1 quarter?
