Posted - Apr 20 2010 : 06:32:10 AM I wanna pick up a 16gig today and I was wondering if anyone here can help point me in the right direction. Basically what I want to know is which USB flash drives are the "best" for 360 use.
Key things I'm looking for: 1. Price, cheap. 2. The ability to play installed games without performance loss. 3. 16gigs
Shortly after the update there was a video on Kotaku that showed a comparison of flash drive vs HDD vs no HDD and the flash drive they used out performed the 360 HDD in every way (Installed games loaded faster on the flash drive then they did installed on the 360 HDD), this is what I want but they never did say what kind of Flash drive it was.
Any help at all would be great.
Also if I move my XBLA games to a flash drive will I still be able to play them offline? |

They said it was the best for the price of 44 for a 16gig. I have found them for less online.
Best install and game play speed.
I ended up with the sansdisk, not sure if it took as long as you said, but I paid $31 with shipping for my 16gig... I haven't really used it yet, so can't report on that. |

Posted - Apr 22 2010 : 8:29:35 PM Well for my 4 gig Pny it took about 3 min... So i guess it just depends on the size.. I just know tat option they mentioned were you can set so much aside for you memory as the actual xbox storage and the rest for what ever was bs for my Pny and one of my local friends got a 16 gig stick and it was the same for him... so I am guessing that is for the Usb External HDD drives people will use... |

The PNYs are good but I found them to cost a little bit more then others (in stores like Future Shop), but if you shop online then you might find some good prices on one. |

Posted - Apr 22 2010 : 08:41:15 AM Roosterteeth did a review on a bunch of them.
They said the sandisc ones were some of the slowest to install (16-21 minutes) were the PNY 16 gig (44 dollars) took 8 minutes.

Posted - Apr 21 2010 : 5:37:01 PM First part, no, not what I was saying. I was explaining where the video/audio file might be based on what you were using.
If it is the thumb drive you setup for the 360, it will see it under console memory units. Now, I have yet to do this with a thumb drive, but that's how memory cards and HDDs work, and it is part of them now.
Second part, no, media center is not needed, and really, unless you have a media center pc and/or media server, it really bogs down the system. I have a 160GB USB HDD plugged into my console with all my music on it. To access my music, I just go to the music "blade" on my dashboard, select external devices and BOOM, there is my music! |

Oh, sorry, and no, if you have a supported audio/video file plugged into the 360 it should play through the video and audio libraries.
Memory Unit for your flash that you have turned into a memory card.
External device for USB drives that you have left as windows flash drives.
Ok so let me get this straight, I can't use my flash drive that I bought yesterday for watching movies and such because I converted it or whatever into a memory card for the 360 right (kind of a one or the other type of deal?)? if so is there a way I can change it back?
Now if I never converted my flash drive into a memory card for the 360 and saved a movie to the flash drive off my PC and then used that flash drive to view the movie on my 360, it would just show up in the "My Videos" part of the dashboard? in other words Windows Media Center is not needed?

"Your Xbox 360 supports a variety of video formats, with playback quality dependent on the type of video you are attempting to play. Read through these specifications and tips to understand the capabilities of streaming media from your PC to your Xbox 360
Supported File Types The Xbox 360 supports AVI, WMV, MPEG-4 Part 2, H.264 and QuickTime movie formats. The file extensions included are as follows: .avi, .divx, .wmv, .mp4, .m4v, .mp4v, and .mov.
Video Playback For video files with the WMV container, playback occurs at 15 Mbps (Mega-Bytes Per Second) with a resolution of 1920 x 1080. Files with the H.264 container have the same resolution, but are played back at 10 Mbps. For AVI and MPEG-4 Part 2 video files, playback is 5 Mbps at 1280 x 720 resolution.
Audio Playback The Xbox 360 supports WMA 7-9 and Lossless audio profiles for WMV video formats. Dolby Digital and MP3 profiles are supported in AVI formats. For MPEG-4 Part 2 and H.264 encoded videos, the console supports only two-channel AAC audio encoding.
Streaming Video With Zune software, the Xbox 360 can stream unprotected AVI, MPEG-4 Part 2, H.264, and WMV video formats. Through Windows Media Player, protected and unprotected WMV videos can be streamed.
Streaming Tips Download a third-party video codec package to expand the amount of video formats you can stream using the Windows Media Player. For better playback, convert video files into the more Mircosoft user-friendly WMV format using a third-party video conversion program." |

Tried out the Flash drive I bought yesterday and I'm pretty impressed, its like another 20gig HDD for half the price. Performance wise it almost matches my 20gig HDD, installs games at about the same rate the 360 HDD does and it seems like it loads the installed games a little bit quicker as well as other things (My pins and insignias for BFBC 2 load almost instantly now).
I have a question tho, does anybody know what video files the 360 supports (like AVI) and would I need Windows Media Center or anything in order to play them?
My understanding is that it should support any open, non-drm, video format.
MPEG 4, AVI, WMV
I know that the 360's VOD service utilizes MPEG4 using H.264 compression.
Also, any non-drm protected content on my iPod plays on the 360 when connected via USB, so that would seem to include .m4v
I don't have a Zune, but I understand it's the same, so those formats would seem likely. (not sure if Zune leaves video in native format, or converts to some .wmv specification) |

Wow, I had no idea some wouldn't be supported. That's garbage.
I think it has to do with the speed/loss rate of the device... I'm not sure if there are special security concerns in there or not... The file is supposed to be encrypted to the whole device doesn't have to be.
Considering the 512MB MU costs $39.99... $69.99 is a relative bargain for 16GB.... |

Yes, 16GB flash cards are cheap. 16GB USB sticks, not quite there, yet.
At least, no where I've seen. |
