Posted - Oct 09 2010 : 1:38:58 PM I’m going to do a blog on my Madden Ultimate Team for Madden 11. To do that, I’ll have to catch you up on where my team “ULTIMATE GOOP” stands at the moment. I called the team “Ultimate Goop” because I had pink eye on the day I made the team.
Madden Ultimate Team: If you don’t know, Ultimate Team is a mode where you get football cards. You’re only allowed to use the players on the cards you have in your collection. You play against the CPU or other players and based on your games, you get coins. With the coins, you can buy random packs of cards to refresh and improve your team. The best players are rare and only come in expensive packs, so you have to start out with a team of scrubs and build from there.
The Story So Far: We’re currently 4-5 having started off with the likes of Jordan Palmer and Erik Ainge as our quarterback options. The best players in the starter pack was Jacob Tamme, a fullback from the Carolina Panthers with a rating of 68 and Manny Ramirez, a Lions guard rated 65. Since then, I’ve bought a few packs and upgraded to Nate Davis (SF) at QB, Dexter McCluester (KC) at WR and Terrance Cody (BAL) for a DT. Mount Cody has a 72 rating. They’re all rookies. I have one “gold” card, which is my coach, Andy Reid.

I was so broke I couldn't afford Carson Palmer. Then I got some money and did the USC collection for 300,000. Then I spent all that money and now I'm so broke again. I've got enough coins to trade my way to a couple collections.
I was so broke, I actually had to play a game for coins, you guys. That's how broke. How did this happen?
Well, firstly, I finally bought an Asomuagh. Then I bought a Legendary Champ Bailey for 500,000. That wiped me out pretty well and then I started spending on the USC and Texas collections. The USC one started to look easier, so I went for that one. Then I accidentally bought two Sam Bakers. I had to play a game to get enough coins for Carson and, as I was getting the Elite Polamalu, a guy messaged me saying I’d won three of his auctions for 310,000. I had about 316,000. I thought abought only buying 2/3, but then I realized I might not get another chance to grab Mangold, Jahri Evans and Vernon Davis for cheap. So I bought them all. Now I’m poor again. It would actually be more profitable for me to finish the 2nd Edition rookies now than the Texas collection, which is good, because in my one and only game, my Legendary Brian Urlacher tore his groin and I might need the Mayo. I’m a little sad that I had to turn in my 2nd edition Clay Matthews, because I still haven’t achieved my goal of having a completely interchangeable defense that looks good in 4-3, 3-4, bump coverage and speed coverage. I’ve got the coverage nailed (it takes 7 specific CBs, btw), and the 4-3, but I still don’t have an top-flight true nose tackle or a pass-rushing LOLB to complete the 3-4 look. Shaun Rogers and a re-purposed Brian Urlacher are as close as I get.

I assume that having played this game for as long as I have, I’m bound to have been scammed before now, and maybe I have been and didn’t know it. I once had a Suh get sniped, could’ve been from a janky account. At any rate, I most definitely got scammed yesterday and it sucked. I paid 99,000 for a Jay Feely Fantasy card, thinking it was part of buying an Asomuagh. It wasn’t. Joke’s on him though, because now I’m using Feely as my kicker and I can appreciate his foot speed.
I didn’t lose all faith, but I did invite a trusted trade partner to backup my next deal and I finally got an Asomuagh. It cost me 200,000and my Nick Mangold. You probably didn’t know I had a Nick Mangold, but I traded my Larry Fitzgerald for it. All-in-all, I’m happy to have Asomuagh since he is not only very good, but a better press corner than Darrelle Revis. Now, I can put out my best 3 CBs and have press ratings of 97, 80 and 88 with a 95 coming into play dime. Or if I want speed, I put in DRC to play dime.
I’ve also finished three collections and picked up a Legendary Brian Urlacher, a Legendary Larry Johnson (to be used in goal line situations? I dunno) and an extra Legendary Julian Peterson (to be sold). I also bought a Steve Hutchinson for 53,000 because the AH got flooded. I closed out the 2nd Edition #1 collection to score myself 300,000 and a Randy Moss (3rd Edition.) This is less like a blog entry and more like a list. I also won my first overtime game in Ultimate Team. I still hate the new rules.

Amongst the mirth of loading up on Platinum weekend, a sad moment occurred when my team, Ultimate Goop, finally reached the point where it was good enough to part ways with Dunta Robinson. He had many interceptions and was the longest tenured member of the team (not including BCA Lance Briggs and Clay Matthews, who are, less face it, cheating the system). He will be missed.
Platinum Weekend is crazy. I’ve gotten about 20 alternate jersey cards and I’d never seen one before last week. I’ve got another Roddy White 2.0 that I’m trying to trade for something spiffy. I basically have turned over the entire roster, but have only improved a little. The highlights would have to be FF Greg Jennings (94 ovr), Brandon Marshall (96 ovr), FF DeAngelo Hall (88 OVR), Rashean Mathis (93 OVR), Insert Jason taylor (99 OVR) and Jay Ratliff (94 OVR). Everyone and their mom is getting the Taylor though, and I’m already over-over booked at WR, so the Marshall kinda sucks.
I also bought some goodies, including a FF Desean Jackson (93 OVR), a Greg Camarillo (for the 2nd edition collection), Jacoby Ford (for the rookies collection), and in general, I’m starting to shift towards buying the cards I need since the auction block is flooded.

A guy offered me 70k for my Lofa Tatupu (88 ovr), but I didn't want to sell it because I wanted to finish the Seahawks collection to get Legendary Julian Peterson. Then he offered 85k and not much later, I saw that Peterson could be bought off the auction block for 33,000. So I did the whole thing. Shortcuts rock.

Posted - Dec 23 2010 : 6:52:36 PM Getting Better
I’m getting better at winning with my 94 OVR team, and I’m having fun again, but also wondering… what’s the point of this game? Is it to build the best team? What does that mean? Best OVR? Or highest card value? Or is the point to fill up all 60+ collections? Or is it just to get the coolest cards on your team?
I ask, because it affects my strategy. If the point is to get the highest OVR, then I should never let go of my FF Phillip Rivers (97 OVR), Reggie Wayne (96 OVR), Larry Fitzgerald (97 OVR), Troy Polamalu (97 OVR), Rookie Chris Johnson (99 OVR), etc… In fact, I wouldn’t ever use up my Tom Brady… or FF Michael Vick and then I’d have 3 QBs and only ever use one. Likewise, I have four WRs rated over 90. I’ve been looking forward to getting rid of my Polamalu, because he bumps my OVR by 2 full points all by himself, but I don’t feel like my team is that much better off than they’d be with an 88 at safety.
So if the point is winning games, then my most valuable cards are Reggie Bush (83 OVR) for kick returns and pure speed routes, Vontae Davis 2.0 (86 OVR), for his press coverage, and Aaron Rogers because he’s as good as Brady, but can scramble in a pinch…
Or is the point is to complete collections? I just finished the 1st Round rookies and now I’ve got 15 completed collections, but that doesn’t even show on the leaderboards! What about spending coins? That’s a symbol of how many you’ve earned, but it has little to do with how “good” you are at Ultimate Team.
Thoughts? What makes a “good” Ultimate Team player?

Posted - Dec 23 2010 : 6:48:44 PM Not That Fun Right Now
You'll notice when I last wrote, my record was 69-39. Now it's 69-48. Technically, that's a nine game losing streak. Why? Because I'm the only honest person who finishes a game, even when I'm losing. Since I boosted my team up to a 92, playing games has become almost uniformly not fun. Everyone at this level cheats, quits or is a Madden savant. I just finished a game where Aaron Rodgers fumbled for me 3/4 times he was tackled. Three fumbles on four tackles.
Plus, it takes 30 minutes to start a game, because everyone quits when they see my 92. The only people who want to play me are cheesers, cheaters and people with 98 OVR.
Now the losing streak isn't really as bad as it seems. I've had 4 definite wins or so where I was quit on. I've also had some straight up cheaters beat me. I've been playing pretty poorly though, because I'm completely demoralized, not only about playing Madden, but about the human condition. Such rampant cheating and quitting is just dispiriting. The one position I haven't improved in is CB and it's killing me. Everyone else has 90+ CBs that close massive gaps instantaneously. I'm looking forward to using up all my studs so I can go back to an 85 or so, but stupidly, I extended all their contracts.

With ultimate Weekend still rolling, I am racking up the Gold cards. I still haven't grabbed any inserts, but I've got some more highlights to report:
Troy Polamalu 97 OVR Ray Lewis 95 OVR Kris Jenkins 94 OVR Sergio Kindle (Very rare rookie) Tony Romo 90 OVR Bears 1947 Throwback Jersey
I read that you get the best cards if you buy at 16 and 46 past the hour, which is actually panning out, but it's slowing me down. I had 588,000 coins at the start of the weekend, and I've still got 399,887 to burn. I'm going to start buying 4-5 packs an hour. When the money runs out, all I need is Sam Bradford to get 500,000 more which I'll spend on completing the core collections. Lions might be first since I've already banked Calving Johnson.

Ultimate Weekend has already irritated my girlfriend. If you don't know, Ultimate Weekend means better cards come out of Ultimate Packs. I've saved up 500,000 coins for this. Highlights include Brett Favre (92 OVR), Roddy White (97 OVR), and Antoine Bethea (95 OVR).
My team is up to 88 OVR and I want it known that in my first match-up with a 90, I won 35-7 and got 1750 coins.

Since my last update, not much has changed on my roster. Sure, we've had some QB roulette from Carson Palmer to Vince Young to Kevin Kolb with a dash of Tebow and Demaryius Thomas has turned out to be a nasty deep threat. Mostly, I'm grinding auctions and saving coins for the next Ultimate Weekend. I'm patching up contracts here and there to keep the gold team together but my OVR has slipped as low as 82.
I'm desperately trying to find a Gerald McCoy card without having to resort to the EA boards. Blech. I missed a buyout lst night by 1 minute. One minute sooner and I could've had a McCoy for the minimum buyout and been on my way to 500,000 more coins. 'Till then, i'm grinding through Gold packs to get more coins and unwrap the occasionally 1st Round rookie for that collection. It's slow going though.

Posted - Nov 14 2010 : 10:45:23 PM If It Kept on Raining, The Levy Was Gonna Break
It finally happened. I got so many coins, I was able to start buying out the last of the 2nd round rookies. When I was able to steal a Jimmy Clausen card for the minimum buyout price, it was all over. I also managed to score a Tony Moeaki, and the last couple of playbooks and uniforms I needed. Finishing those collections brought me about 700,000 coins. Since my balance had just broken 100,000, this was a big deal. There was an Ultimate Weekend and a Give Back Weekend, so I've been able to spend big money on packs and get a rash of gold cards and even, I kid you not, one Fantasy card (a Hakeen Nicks, 88 ovr!).
I've still got 558,965 coins. The last 50,000 were spent on an Eric berry auction. Now I just need Gerald McCoy and the 1st round collection will start to come together. I've already got Demaryius Thomas.
Now, I'll vainly list some the gold cards I've pulled lately. Unfortunately, they've been mostly offense:
Kris Dielman, LG, 95 OVR Calvin Johnson (THE MEGATRON), WR, 91 OVR Michael Griffin, FS, 91 OVR D’Brickshaw Ferguson, LT, 90 OVR Alan Faneca, LG, 89 OVR Ahmad Bradshaw, HB, 88 OVR Gary Brackett, MLB, 87 OVR Brent Celek, TE, 87 OVR Vonta Davis, CB, 82 OVR (but 95 at press coverage!) Devin Hester, WR, 78 OVR (but 98 speed for running corner routes. I was finally able to drop Ted Ginn the way Ted Ginn drops passes!)

Posted - Nov 01 2010 : 8:02:59 PM Stats
Madden Ultimate Team doesn't really keep stats. It would be a mess anyway, since I've probably had about 300 different players in my starting lineup. But I love stats , so I'm going to makeup a leader board for my team in this update.
Passing: Mark Sanchez (BCA) has been my quarterback on and off, so I have to think he is the leading passer in terms of both touchdowns and yardage. I haven't extended the contracts off any other QBs and am still using Tebow and Joe Webb for specialty plays.
Rushing: Ahmad Bradshaw (BCA) has been my stud running back since I got him. I keep extending his contract, but next time he runs out, I may give Cadillac Willams a turn. It should be noted that when I go into the wildcat, Dexter McCluster ® racks up yards and TDs on reverses. Possibly more than any other RB I've had.
Receiving: McCluster ® takes the cake here too, because I had his first edition card and soon after it expired, I pulled his 2nd edition card which is even better. Mardy Gillyard ® probably had the 2nd most catches and yards, but in the red zone I used to rely on Juagin Iglesias. Right now, I'm rocking the gold Jericho Cotchery card .
Blocking: My longest tenured blocker was probably Rodger Saffold ® but he has expired. He was my LT until I pulled two Bryan Bulaga cards. I got my center, Maurkice Pouncey, with 50+ games on his contract, so he may be around forever.
Tackles: My top tackler is probably a close race between my two breast cancer awareness linebackers, Lance Briggs and Clay Matthews. I'm going to give it to Matthews, because I'll be mentioning Briggs again soon.
Sacks: I'm pretty sure that Ndamukong Suh ® is my leading sacker, even though most of my sacks come on edge rushes to catch scramble-spammers. My ends have been constantly changing, though I remember Darrell Reid and Brandon Graham ® getting to the QB fairly consistently.
Interceptions: Lance Briggs is always lurking in the middle, but people love to try to beat my 2nd corner. First, I hid Chris Cook ® there and he racked up the most interceptions, but I’ve since upgraded to Joe Haden ® who is gaining fast.
Kicking: My favorite kicker is Rhys Lloyd because he gets touchbacks and can bomb field goals. I've had David Buehler.
Punting: Brett Kern punts the most.
Kick/Punt returns: Far and away, Stephan Logan is my leading returner. I've tried McCluster and Terry Ginn back there, but Logan is the touchdown maker. I've probably had 10 KR for TD and 2 PR for TD with Logan back there.
Coaching: I have no idea what coach has been best, but I'm rocking the Wisenhunt currently.

Posted - Oct 22 2010 : 6:53:15 PM It's Been Awhile I had a massive losing streak right after my last post, but I seem to have righted the ship. I had my Team OVR as high as 79, but it's floated back to 75 with Tebow at QB and my two pink linebacker cards riding the pine. I've been buying up rookie cards on the auction block, since they're cheaper to extend and I've actually got 79,000 coins in my bank right now. Now that I'm able to auction off spare cards and finish collections, my finances are much better.
How Bad I beat People My last two games were quitters, but let me describe. The first one got a 14-0 lead on me and I came thundering back. He quit when it was 42-14 after a fumbled KO return turned into a TD for me. I tried to let up. The next one, Chriss Cook had INT returns for TD on the first two opening drives. Itâs time to let you know about the rest of my defense.

Posted - Oct 15 2010 : 5:48:31 PM Finally, A Breakthrough
I got two Colt McCoy cards and sold one for 18,000. (A steal, I know, but I didn't get how cutthroat the auction block can be.) Then, I used the Auction Block to finish off the AFC coaches collection for 25,000 coins. Then I used that money to finish the NFC coaches and that money to finish AFC stadiums. I now have 44,000 coins and am two stadiums away from 25,000 more. I've bought a bunch of silver packs to load up on contract cards and I'm finally getting past the curve. I even splurged on a Brian Price card with 28 games on it. Now I have an actually DT. I bought a premium pack and got 2 gold players. I bid on a Maurkice Pouncey.
Instead of ranting about my successes any longer, I'll just throw out my starting offensive lineup. Defense to come later.

Posted - Oct 14 2010 : 02:58:54 AM I Lost All My Studs My 5 games with my pink card guys are up. I still have Richard Marshall, because he's been hurt and 2 games left with Clay Matthews. I'm downgrading from from Mark Sanchez to Colt McCoy. I have no idea, who I'll use as a halfback and I can't pass rush the way I used to. I've only got two legit DTs, and they're both lvl60. I have a pink contract extension that will get me 24 games for my pink players, but I can't decide if I want to spend it on Marshall or Ahmad Bradshaw. I guess the CB is probably more important.
Pissin' Me Off Quitters are still pissing me off. I was beating a guy 58-14 and he quit with 30 seconds left. I wrote and called him a jerk. I can think of other things to call him. Since it's double coins weekend, I figure that cost me an hour and about 4,500 coins. I'm only 4 coaches away from getting a 25,000 coin bonus though, so I'll try to move on.

Posted - Oct 14 2010 : 12:33:30 AM Boobs to the Rescue Wild changes have occurred with my Madden Ultimate Team. I broke down and spent 400MSP a Breast Cancer Awareness pack, because I love boobies. I got Mark Sanchez, Ahmad Bradshaw, Lance Briggs, Clay Matthews and Richard Marshall. It translated into my first user sack and 4 straight wins. I’m a little worried, because my overall skill shot up to 75, but I still have bronze cards playing on both sides of the line and receivers with the dropsies.
Double coin weekend is also awesome. I’ve gotten 4 games in and earned about 11,000 coins in them. That’s allowed me to buy better packs and get some more rookies.
What Would I do With 25,000 Coins? I’m also 5 cards away from completing the AFC coach collection. That would get me 25,000 coins and a unique card which is the point where I’ll allow myself to buy a platinum pack. I think the 5 coaches I need would cost me a little over 3,500. I’d be even closer if I hadn’t accidentally discarded a Gary Kubiak card.
