So at this current time I am sitting in my biotech class with a research project on my plate and I have no idea what on Earth to do as far as the topic is concerned. I am interested in food safety and maybe working with killing bacteria in a new way or something along the lines. Any ideas on what I should do for my project? Many thanks in advance! |

Sounds like a good topic...
after a quick google search a lot of material came up. Like Dog mentioned, I would focus on the actual mechanism of how garlic kills E coli on a molecular/cellular level.
Looks like the compound that acts as an antibiotic in garlic is Allicin. The following link I found shows some of the chemistry involved with this compound:

It is interesting that this compound is released more as you crush or chop the garlic, but degrades quickly if it is heated. You could also get into some of the advantages and disadvantages of using this or even the other health benefits of garlic, but focus a lot on the science on why garlic does these things.
Hmm, after going to that site, think I need to eat more garlic.

I need the topic, it has to be something that is related to the biotechnology field. I also forgot to mention that the project cant be too time consuming as my boss needs me available to work weekends and nights. As for articles and sources, I should be able to find those easily once I have a clue as to what I am doing. I am looking into how an enzyme in garlic terminates the O157 strain of E Coli. |
