That is my question. I've been looking at getting a blu-ray player for the past few weeks and I've been contemplating a PS3 as the best bet. What I want to know is: is it worth buying if all I really want it for is blu-ray and maybe some god of war? Or would it just be better to buy a cheaper stand alone blu-ray player?

yupp, i was one of those crazy people out at 3 am this morning...
picked up the ps3 bundle at walmart - for $299 got the 120GB slim, infamous, batman:aa, and blue ray of dark night. while i was waiting in line i got alerted to the deal on amazon... same price, no tax, no shipping, games-infamous and killzone2. so we ordered that one too. will probably end up taking the one back to walmart, but not until the one from amazon gets delivered. ends up saving $23 in tax plus the $10 credit on amazon, not bad at all

there were a lot of good ps3 deals on black friday. amazon was offering the ps3 slim 120gb hd model which included In Famous and Kill Zone 2, plus an amazon $10 promotion to be used on a future purchase, no tax and free shipping for $299.99. thought it was a pretty decent deal. best buy around me also had the ps3 with LBP and Rachet and Clank for $299.99. No need to stand in line early for this one. They had plenty of them to go around.

Did anyone pick up a ps3?

Gamestop and Walmart for Black Friday here in the states is also offering PS3 bundled deals that include the ps3 slim 120gb model and a few games for $299.99. these deals are only while supplies last. if you want a ps3 this is now the time to pick one up.

Wow, I've never even seen that adapter before.

Unfortunately, most people haven't, so you get the statement that the 360 isn't really HDMI, or it isn't really 1080p and such, but component is quite capable of 1080p (and the 360 outputs 1080p via component) and even a launch 360 supports full 1080p via HDMI with HDCP when using that adapter. It's pricey, but not really any pricier than buying HDMI at the store.

Dude in Canada we do have our version of netflix, alot less user friendly than the American version but still able to download and watch movies....

Meh, I'm more of a possession type person now that I think about ti, never downloaded movies from netflix type sites and I've only downloaded arcade games when it comes to my gaming library. Even my PC games are actual box versions when I get them, I never digital download. Plus my box doesn't have HDMI support cause it's from way back.

not sure if it is going to be offered in canada or if you even have best buy stores up there, but on black friday here in the states, best buy is offering the PS3 slim 120gb model with Ratchet & Clank (Future: A crack in Time) and Little Big Planet (Game of the Year Edition) for $299.99. best buy is also offering an Insignia blu-ray player for $99.99 normally $150. The ps3 deal is a door-buster so you must get up early to be lucky to get one.

Since I never play it, not sure what happened to the original controller.

Seriously, I lost it. 1.5 years now...

So, I have a second one that stays tethered to the PS3, and the BD Remote that sits with all the others (360 Media, TV, STB, Surround Sound, HD DVD...)

HD on Blu-ray beats the snot out of every other "HD" content out there.

Also, with Blu-rays as cheap as DVDs now, sometimes even cheaper, I can't see it as a bad choice.

I do feel like the $25 BD remote for the PS3 was a bit much, but since I can never find my PS3 controller, I had to get one.

lol never had a problem finding mine, no my problem is since the controller never shuts itself off like the 360 it would constantly have a dead battery... and that 3ft USB charging cable they give you is about worthless when you're sitting across the living room

I'm gonna sit on it for a while looking for a good deal. If I find one I'll probably get it. My own DVD collection isn't outstanding I have like 20 titles so switching to blu-ray isn't a huge issue. Thanks for the input guys.

I didn't realize you were in Canada - that does make the choice easier as there are little streaming options. Hunt down a good deal - bound to be some holiday bundle that makes a PS3 that much easier to pull the trigger on.

I'm just not partial to Bluray - a new technology were I either ending up splitting collections between previously bought DVDs and newly purchased BDs or replacing DVDs with BDs. It's just too costly of an endeavor for me when my existing DVD collection is over 500 titles, especially when BDs are easily $20 US ea on sale - reminds me of the early days of DVD.

I say grab it. I say that because streaming is a great technology, but what if your friend or family member wants to borrow a Blu-ray and they don't subscribe to anything that allows them to stream?? You can't beat having items on hand. What if the net is down and you can't stream? Oh, here I go, I have that movie on hand and I can pop it right in, no problem. The PS3 has a great blu ray player and God of war will be great. I would go with finding a great deal on one and just doing it =) That is just me though. I am the type of guy who likes to have something in hand and not rely on a certain media to provide for me.

Well you guys could always help beat diseases by dedicating your PS3 to Folding@Home like I've done
lol

..no seriously, its in the livingroom, my Grandmother took over my livingroom, so it does nothing but run F@H now.

And as far as Red Box... I'm SOOO sick of those effin' things, always put at the most annoying locations, people think they can just park anywhere to stop at them and the lines.

I agree with andy8180 - with ridiculously easy access to movie / TV content via Netflix streaming & rentals I don't even consider getting a Bluray player anymore. My belief is that Bluray is a fleeting technology, and will rapidly be replaced by streaming content - it's the next logical evolutionary step in content delivery. And take in to account that full 1080p content can be streamed, there really is little reason to invest in a Bluray player, when one can or will be able to access the same content via less expensive means.

A Bluray player in my opinion is certainly an impulse buy or for those that must have every "technological marvel", regardless of it's functional lifespan. If you do get a Bluray player, I would go with a PS3 over a standalone player - at least when you no longer care to watch the Bluray movies, the device will still have a little functional use with gaming.

I've also looked a number of times at getting a PS3 for both gaming and Bluray, but still cannot justify the price for how little use it would get.
