Posted - Dec 06 2009 : 10:32:13 AM Have to say, this is the first FPS to catch my eye in a really long time. I know there are a lot of people out there who tout on the "Big 3" (Halo, CoD, GoW) but, to be honest, none of those have ever really "done it" for me for various reasons. (Even when I was playing GoW2 every day it was more for the comradere of the friends with whom I was playing than for anything else.)
So, when I first started hearing about MAG my reaction was "meh". Then I started looking into it. 256 person MP? No ****? I'm skeptical.
Some of my friend's pre-ordered and got on the Beta. Their initial reactions were indeed favorable. But I still wasn't going to pre-order a game I wasn't sure I would like without getting to play some kind of demo first, not vice-versa.
Then they made the Beta public. So I went ahead and snagged it.
I must say, I'm impressed. What I thought would degenerate into total chaos is actually done fairly well.
So, if you're a PS3 owner/player and haven't looked into MAG yet, you may want to give it a look. It doesn't really have anything super-fresh or unique when it comes to FPS game-play, but the way in which they pull it off is refreshing. |

Over the past few months of having switched from exclusive use of one console to the other I have noticed exactly what you mention, sir. I simply wasn't going to bring it up because I am not oblivious to the fact that some here believe I have joined "the dark side" and no longer welcome my input or criticism. *chuckle*
But yeah, I humbly and politely agree. :) |

Which is pretty much exactly how LIVE was when it started out. Basically until Halo 2. We used to play in multiplayer all the time, and the d-bag quotient was actually quite low. |

Posted - Jan 27 2010 : 11:20:44 PM Oh, and to combat the basic claims of 'it's not as big as they claim' or 'they're misrepresenting it' are actually kind far off. In the past 30 or so hours, I've been in gun battles involving about 20 people on a side. Considering I was in a match with 32 people on a side (access to larger player scenarios is only available in higher ranks), I'd say that's pretty impressive, especially considering if the other 12 people wanted to be in the fight they could have been, but were sniping or off doing their own thing or something.
I can't wait to get enough rank to join into the larger battles. |

Posted - Jan 27 2010 : 3:58:47 PM Well, I've had my hands on the full version of this game now for about 24 hours and I must say that I'm fairly impressed. It is fun, enjoyable, certainly can be chaotic, but there's a nice element of organization to it.
As is true with any online fragger, communication wins battles. It's just nice to see the element of an in-game command structure that, surprisingly, most people abide by. Only the platoon, squad, and battle commanders have access to certain in-game functions, and so the quality of "officers" really matters. A good officer will be constantly lighting up objectives and giving directions to the grunts in the field, which seems to inspire a sense of camaraderie in the grunts which make them work well together. In the past day I've seen rooms full of randoms work together very well and win battles. This is something I'm confident in saying seems rare in other FPS games that I have played online on any platform.
Of course, you still have those random lone-wolves that just go off and do their own thing, but they actually seem to help matters sometimes when it seems like the enemy is adapting to your tactics. The occasional suicidally up-front squad member can usually cut through about 3 or 4 enemies before he's gunned down, causing the remaining enemies to expose their position.
Aside from that it is nothing really extraordinary or innovative. The graphics are pretty sweet, a have been fixed quite a bit from the beta version, as have been the joining and load times. The whole thing seems to run pretty smoothly.
The only thing I don't really care for is being relatively committed to a faction. You have only one of three to choose from, and have to make a choice based on very little available information. All you really have to go on about the factions is propaganda/recruit videos created for the game. The videos do offer website addys (that actually function) for each PMC so if you really want to invest some time before starting your character you can check out the different websites which give a little more information about what weapons, gear, abilities, and vehicles each faction has at their disposal.
Once you start getting XP for your character, though, if you want to switch factions it will be at the expense of everything you have earned, learned, and unlocked. Kinda a steep fine, in my opinion, but oh well. |

Well, yes, this is partially true, from what I can gather with all the reading and developer-video-watching I've been doing in the past few days, 256 people can/will load into the same map at the same time. The maps are large enough that it can be broken into groups of 16 or 32 or something from each team spawning in each corner of the map, attempting to overtake the opposition and move on, with all groups working toward either occupying the same part of the map or completely eliminate the opposition.
So, no, we won't be in constant 128v128 fire-fights, but there will be times and potential to have over 50 people from each time alive and shooting at each other, depending on the game mode and how the teams choose to play. I'm pretty optimistic about the game. I think it will be fun at least for a while (probably a lot longer for me) simply due to the scope of the game. |

Go play some PS3 games. Better yet, why don't you study for your upcoming finals. Of course, I'm assuming that you haven't quit school to concentrate on winning the latest challenge.
Your resume for Kinko's will look AWESOME!!!

Sparky, you're right. I just tried the code and it didn't work. Upon checking on the site (I actually won it from Gamerzines), they said the demo ended the 4th. Should have used it when I got it two weeks ago. Oh well... |

I will be trying this game out. I should have it release day, whenever that is. I have no idea. |
