Being somewhat of a programmer that dabbles in game programming I thought of a little game that showcases 360 voice. Did any of the games you ever played that were so bad you just wanted to shoot the game itself? Well I may have a fix for you. Everyone has played Space Invaders/Galaga in some form or fashion, so what I was thinking was using the icons of the games (like you see on MGC's or Xbox.com's game list when you list your games) would take the place of the invaders and the good old 360 voice icon would serve as your ship. You could blast all those games that drove you insane all you wanted.

Since I already have a "Space Invaders" game with a Star Wars theme that I wrote a while back, I already have a lot of the code for this game in place. I'd just need to replace the ships with the icons and change the music and sound effects to something not Star Wars-ish.

I put this project on the back burner back in March but have started back up again today. I've decided to change the "space" background and go with a 360 motherboard background to make it appear you're fighting it out inside a 360 console. It will go with the stoyline better...Yes there's a story line.

I had revived a thread about this in the other gaming section, but it seems there's more traffic here and I'm hoping to get some good feedback so I will let the old one die out again.

Description:
This is an overall screen of the game itself. You have a space background. You can't tell in the screenshot, but those stars scroll down constantly during the game. You can see several rows of icons shooting green lasers at the 3v logo (you the player) which can shoot back a red laser. The icons do move back and forth and drop down just like in the original space invaders. (Yes the move faster with the fewer you have left on the screen).

Description:

This is a little bit in the game where I've shot some of the icons. You'll notice an explosion graphic at the top where I hit an icon. You'll also notice at the bottom of the screen a second explosion graphic...where they got me. The laser fire from the icons is totally random so there's NO pattern. Also, the explosion graphics are FULLY animated.

Description:

This one is real similar to the first one except you'll notice a transparent sphere around the 3v icon (your "ship"). This is a shield that comes on after you respawn from taking a hit. It's also fully animated and will "blink" a few times right before it goes out.

As I mentioned earlier, I've already replaced the space background with the 360's motherboard. I'm not 100% happy with the picture so if someone has some suggestions on where to find more I'd appreciate it. I just used Google earlier.

This is only "level 1". There are a lot of things I'd like to add in to this but these screenshots will give you an idea of what I had started on. I'll post some updated screenshots of the revised game when I get a background I'm content with. I'll also add in the base "shields" that you can hide behind using some logo from 360v. Probably one of the "my 360 can blog" pictures. I'd also LOVE to have a 3d version of the 3v logo in .x (best) or .3ds format!

NOTE: This is a PC game. Although I do have the XNA Game Studio and a hefty book to read up on, I'm not skilled enough with this to do a 360 version...at least not yet. If Burger King can have their own game, I don't see why us 360 Voice'ers can't either.

Tx/Bill - currently I don't have a scoring system in the game. Depending on which way I go with the story points may not be of any "use". It's super easy to add though. I'll try to post up the story line by the end of the week.

Update: I tinkered with different backgrounds most of yesterday afternoon. I found a couple 360 systemboards to use as backgrounds that kind of work but I'm not 100% happy with them (I want several different ones). I also had to change the color of the icon's lasers to a dark blue as green lasers on a green system board just didn't show up well at all. I also have the same problem with the green 3v logo not showing up well against a green motherboard background. I am also looking at adding the base "shields" at the bottom of the screen that the player can hide behind (until they are destroyed at least) but I'm not having much success at a suitable 3v graphic. I tried the "my 360 can blog" bar graphics but they are too long and don't look right. If anyone has anything they can send me or even create I'd appreciate it. Otherwise I'll be forced to go back to the space background which then throws the story I had out the window. I'd REALLY like a 3d model in either .x or .3ds format of the 3v logo. I may have a road trip today for work so I don't know if I'll get to do anything else on the game today or not.

Sorry House, no "real" achievements in this game. Maybe one day. I'd need to get XNA under my belt first.

I've got an all day road trip today so it's not looking good for getting any coding done. Tomorrow looks decent though so hopefully I can get something done then.

Update: I finally get to code today! I'll be adding the 2 base "shields" like in the traditional space invaders style game today. I still don't have any graphics 3v related that look right, so I'll just have some blank "squares" in place so I can get the code in place. The icons will be able to shoot the shields and after so many hits they are destroyed. I'm also going to redo the way I have the icons move. Currently they are set to move by the row they are on instead of individually. They all look like they move on their own, but if you destroy 2 icons on the right and have 2 on the left, even though the 2 on the right are gone, the 2 on the left don't move all the way right. Kind of hard to explain but I'll fix this before a demo is out so you guys won't ever see that. It'll take more coding on my part but it will make the game more "correct". If I have time I'll put in a couple of icons that will move across the screen at the top and they'll drop bombs on you too. You'll be able to shoot those bombs, but can't shoot an icon's lasers. Can't make it too easy now can I even if it is only the first level.

Last update for the day: I managed to get the base shields in place and the icons' lasers can hit them and display a "shield buckling" animation when that happens. Picture a Star Trek: TNG when the Enterprise takes a hit with it's shields up...you'll get the idea. I'm working on getting the shields to blow up when they take too many hits but I seem to have a bug that I'll have to trace out. I'll try to get that done before I get out of here for the day. Some progress at least. When I get the base shield bug fixed, I'll get a revised screenshot so you can see the new background, etc.

Saturday update: I never did get the base shield collision right so I scrapped the code and will redo it. I did do a little sound effect tweeking today as well as fixed some collision issues with icon lasers not in play and the player's "ship". It's some progress at least. Getting a little done each day is my goal. The game is still running at 60 frames per second which is exactly where I want it to be.

Sunday update: Added two "bombers" that will go across the top the screen and drop 2 bombs each randomly as they travel across the screen until you shoot them. They don't drop the bombs yet nor can you shoot them, but I have them moving on the screen how I want them. I'll work on the bombs and being able to shoot both the bombers and bombs as well as the bombs being able to hit you and the base shields. I am also going to make the icons that appear on the screen to be random instead of the same ones every time. That would make "achievements" more interesting even if they don't add to your gamerscore...

You'll need a decent pc to play it. The developement machine I'm using is an intel duo core2 1.53mhz with 4 gig of ram, geforce 9800 with 512 meg ram video card on vista 32bit premium edition. It maxes out at 60 frames per second which is what I'm getting on my machine consistantly. Once I finish the first level I'll release a demo for you guys to play test and give me some system specs/frames per second on your machines. This will help me tweak timing issues if need be.

Today's plan is to work on getting the graphics for the "bombers" in place and to get the bombs to drop down the screen, be able to shoot the bombs, and the bombs being able to hit you and the base shields and all releated animations to the above working. I also want to add more icons to the game and have it pick randomly which ones will show on screen so you aren't looking at the same ones each time.

I still need to get the base shields to explode after taking so many hits, get the sound effect glitch for the shooting icons fixed, and redo the way I have the icons move/drop down on the screen to they move more "traditionally" but I doubt I'll get to this today so I'll shoot for tomorrow. It all depends on how busy I am at the office.
