Update: "level 2" is finished. I added two more bombers to fire 2 lasers each at you. I also made the starting position of each "bomber" random to make things more interesting.

NEW LEVEL!! here's a screenshot of "level 3"

http://img201.imageshack.us/img201/408/level03rp1.jpg

This level you'll have more than 1 "shot" like a typical space invaders game. You'll be able to have 2 shots on screen at once and like an X-Wing fighter from star wars games, each laser alternates firing off the opposite side of your "ship". Basically that means one laser fires off the left side and the other fires off the right (mix and repeat) for you non-star wars fans. The icons in this level "drop" from the top of the screen at random positions in the playing area. All you have to do is shoot them. They do not shoot back but they move fast. I'm not finished coding this level yet but it's far enough along to give a screenshot. I need to go back and add collision detection for everything and that will wrap it up for this level. I plan on adding other kinds of levels besides "shooting" levels. You'll see what I mean when I crank out "level 4"...

UPDATE:

I took a break from coding and decided to work on a 3d model for the next level. I took a plain stock car and added 360 Voice logos on the hood and doors. I'm just using a model viewer from software I already had so the car itself isn't all that big. The wheels do actually spin though. Here's a screenshot:

http://img160.imageshack.us/img160/2096/level4racergc8.jpg

I did NOT create the car itself and I'm by NO means a graphic artist but the level I'll be doing next will be a top/down view so all you'll really see of the car is the hood/roof which displays the 360v logo best. I've seen some pretty good displays of graphic talent in the showcase forums. If anyone wants to contribute to editing the .bmp file to make it look "better" I'd appreciate it and I'll add you in the credits of my game.

After taking a couple of weeks off due to holidays, getting rear ended in a car accident, etc, I'm finally back on this game.

UPDATE - started back on level 3 today. The falling icons now have collision detection with the player's ship and will explode graphically like it's supposed to. I still need to go back and add the respawn shielding and remove the icons that were either shot by you or collided with your ship as well as set up the collision detection for the two lasers the player can shoot.

Something to think about - I'm debating on adding joystick control to this game which would allow us to use a 360 controller (or most other controllers) instead of a keyboard layout.

Other levels "designed" but not coded: a breakout level, a pac-man level, some platform levels, and some driving levels. My goal is to have 360 different levels so I have a lot left to do ;) Some of these levels will be in full 3d so I'm hoping that mixes things up a good bit.

Wow, it's been a LONG time since I've worked on this game. Now that the holidays are behind me I can start back on this project. I'm adding the code to allow the use of a joystick so you can choose between a controller or the keyboard. I'll be using a 360 controller as my test unit. I thought it was ironic that you're shooting 360 game icons with a 360 controller on the pc...I have to hard code all 3 levels but it's not much code to implement the controller function.

I'm not big on bringing back old/dead threads but this one has all the links to everything so it was just easier to do it this way.

Some have asked what's going on with the game so here's an update:

Like many "game" developers, you come to a point where you just can't get what you want out of an engine and need to change. I was programming this game in Dark Basic Classic, which is the old 3d programming language specifically designed for game creation. I have decided to switch over to Dark Basic Professional, which will give me access to tons of new commands and features (shaders, lighting, etc) not to mention a MASSIVE boost in framerate, which is what I needed most. I have to take some time to play with Pro so there may not be much development progress in the game as I'll probably just do a complete rewrite of the code to the newer language. Many commands are compatable between the two versions of classic and pro but some are not. No, I'm not having a Duke Nuke 'Em Forever moment, just trying to make the best game I possibly can. Pro is still being updated and improved upon where the classic version is not. There are many more tools available for Pro thus making my game creating a bit more easier and efficient. You'll see what I mean when I show the first few screenshots of some things I'm working on.

In a nutshell this project is by no means canned. It's just being revamped with newer/updated development tools to produce a better quality game.

The screenshots you were looking at were off the old engine. Once I get my brain wrapped around the new software tools I'll be able to post new screenshots. I'll probabaly do complete rewrites of the levels to take full advantage of the new software. It's not as bad as it sounds and I'll be able to put more "stuff" in the levels themselves....

Been quite lately so I thought I'd post an update:

Kinda toying with ideas for additional levels. I figured since games like Rock Band and Guitar Hero are so popular, I may do something similar to them. Well more like Boom Boom Rocket and use the game icons along with certain button presses to score points with. Since this is just one "level" and not a full game on it's own you'd only have one song to beat.

I'll also be putting in some more "modern" levels, like a 3rd person shooter type and racing levels. If you've seen some of the character models I've put up in other threads (I think they're in this one somewhere too) I already did a "hero" character and a racing car. More on this later.

Wow, this thread got old in a hurry. I normally don't bring bad dead threads but this one has all the relevent info in it. I'm considering diving back in to this project. Since it won't be sold and is more of a "fan" game, there shouldn't be any issues with the current owners of the site.

Right now I'm torn in which direction to take. I could use the existing code I have and continue that way, or switch over to a more up to date version of the developing software in which most of the code would work (or do a complete rewrite) but then only pc users would get to play it. The other option would be to dive in to XNA and make it available for 360 and pc owners. Not sure that's the best direction to go since I'm not up to speed with XNA yet and this would slow down the development time drastically.

So I guess now I'm looking for suggestions from the would-be players of the game. What do you guys think?

Update: Been toying around the idea of a tower defense level. I haven't done any code on it yet, but it's in the design stage. I'm curious to see if I can pull it off.

Better late than never update.

No actual coding, but have worked on a few level designs. I swear this wont take as long as Duke Nukem Forever did. In my defense, I'm just one person, where they had a whole team. Free time is super limited. I also want to play some games on the 360. Such a dilema...I still haven't decided which direction to go as far as what software to use to create the game to either use the existing or go with something else.

As I am extremely interested in pursuing programming in the gaming industry this is awesome. What language are you using?

I'm thinking a heroic theme where the lowly, yet powerful rebels usurped the decaying kingdom for justice and peace for all.

The first few levels were done in Dark Basic (now classic). The newer version is called Professional which has more features, faster handling of code which improves framerates, etc. and better object handling. Still, you wouldn't be able to play it on your 360 console which is why I was considering dabbling in XNA so everyone could play it but it would take me a while to get my arms around a new programming language with the limited free time I have.

Ahh I see, I'm actually in the process of the whole XNA thing, just learning the code for it now, but I know it'll be a long time before theres any point in getting the membership for it

I had an MSDN license some time ago but I didn't renew it. That was before XNA so I don't even know if XNA is included with it or not. I'm with you, no point in getting a membership again unless I go full force with XNA which I'm leaning against.

I had it thru my Visual Basic programming days. I had to buy the software suite and it was included.

Hey fsh, since this is a 360v themed game, think there would be room here to host the download?

What kind of download is it? You have VB knowledge, that's good to know.

It would be a .zip file or whatever you'd prefer. No idea how big it will be. My goal is 360 levels all having media files along with it. I'll make it the extra fshy edition. I'll get a steelbook version for Joshnorm, and include a certain fruit drink for Mango, and a pet hair remover for DoT.
