I wanna pick up a 16gig today and I was wondering if anyone here can help point me in the right direction. Basically what I want to know is which USB flash drives are the "best" for 360 use.
Key things I'm looking for:
1. Price, cheap.
2. The ability to play installed games without performance loss.
3. 16gigs
Shortly after the update there was a video on Kotaku that showed a comparison of flash drive vs HDD vs no HDD and the flash drive they used out performed the 360 HDD in every way (Installed games loaded faster on the flash drive then they did installed on the 360 HDD), this is what I want but they never did say what kind of Flash drive it was.
Any help at all would be great.
Also if I move my XBLA games to a flash drive will I still be able to play them offline? |

Well, really any flash drive should have equal performance, or at least close.
With solid state memory, there is no seek time, there is no waiting for the proper sector to be under the read or write head.
Saying that a solid state device was faster than a traditional HDD is like saying that sugar tastes sweeter than a lemon.
I think any of the major brands (Cruzer, PNY, etc) will serve you needs. Try tigerdirect.com or similar site. Seems like $30 was the price I was seeing for 16GB.
You would only be able to play offline on the initial console to DL them, much like if you swap you HDD to another console, they don't work offline that way either. |

Yes, 16GB flash cards are cheap. 16GB USB sticks, not quite there, yet.

| sorry, rather I do have usb flash cards... the girl actually ordered them through her work vendor (she deals with all things computery for her company), so she got them for $6 each. pretty good deal. |

I'd check the xbox forums for know working ones... I bought a 16gb usb stick that got rejected without checking...
I ended up getting the sansdisk cruzer one... Which is probably what the "official" one will be.... |

I think it has to do with the speed/loss rate of the device... I'm not sure if there are special security concerns in there or not... The file is supposed to be encrypted to the whole device doesn't have to be.
Considering the 512MB MU costs $39.99... $69.99 is a relative bargain for 16GB.... |

Tried out the Flash drive I bought yesterday and I'm pretty impressed, its like another 20gig HDD for half the price. Performance wise it almost matches my 20gig HDD, installs games at about the same rate the 360 HDD does and it seems like it loads the installed games a little bit quicker as well as other things (My pins and insignias for BFBC 2 load almost instantly now).
I have a question tho, does anybody know what video files the 360 supports (like AVI) and would I need Windows Media Center or anything in order to play them? |

My understanding is that it should support any open, non-drm, video format.
MPEG 4, AVI, WMV
I know that the 360's VOD service utilizes MPEG4 using H.264 compression.
Also, any non-drm protected content on my iPod plays on the 360 when connected via USB, so that would seem to include .m4v
I don't have a Zune, but I understand it's the same, so those formats would seem likely. (not sure if Zune leaves video in native format, or converts to some .wmv specification) |

Oh, sorry, and no, if you have a supported audio/video file plugged into the 360 it should play through the video and audio libraries.
Memory Unit for your flash that you have turned into a memory card.
External device for USB drives that you have left as windows flash drives. |

Ok so let me get this straight, I can't use my flash drive that I bought yesterday for watching movies and such because I converted it or whatever into a memory card for the 360 right (kind of a one or the other type of deal?)? if so is there a way I can change it back?
Now if I never converted my flash drive into a memory card for the 360 and saved a movie to the flash drive off my PC and then used that flash drive to view the movie on my 360, it would just show up in the "My Videos" part of the dashboard? in other words Windows Media Center is not needed?

First part, no, not what I was saying. I was explaining where the video/audio file might be based on what you were using.
If it is the thumb drive you setup for the 360, it will see it under console memory units. Now, I have yet to do this with a thumb drive, but that's how memory cards and HDDs work, and it is part of them now.
Second part, no, media center is not needed, and really, unless you have a media center pc and/or media server, it really bogs down the system. I have a 160GB USB HDD plugged into my console with all my music on it. To access my music, I just go to the music "blade" on my dashboard, select external devices and BOOM, there is my music! |

| Well I picked up a Pny 4 gig for $14 at Best Buy and it has been great... I am mainly using it for portability of saved games when I am not home... I think I have one arcade game n it... So far I haven't even hit halfway on storage and I transferred alot lol... |

Roosterteeth did a review on a bunch of them.
They said the sandisc ones were some of the slowest to install (16-21 minutes) were the PNY 16 gig (44 dollars) took 8 minutes.

The PNYs are good but I found them to cost a little bit more then others (in stores like Future Shop), but if you shop online then you might find some good prices on one. |
