We get a ton of email from people asking why they lost their streak badge. I am posting some helpful content here that explains WHY you might lose it and HOW you can keep it!
Why we miss the games you play We pull all data about if you play or not starting at MIDNIGHT PST.
The only date we get from Microsoft for your gaming is LASTPLAYED. This means if you start playing a game at 6pm and stop at 7pm for dinner... then start playing again at 8pm and stop playing at 1am... the game WILL NOT COUNT because you played it OVER the midnight cutoff. The lastplayed date will not by the NEXT DAY and it won't appear in your blog.
How to prevent losing a streak Before you play any major retail game, always play a little arcade game first for a few minutes. Pop in Geometry Wars or maybe Frogger... anything! Play that game... then exit to the dashboard... then put in your retail game. By starting and stopping a game during the day (before midnight!) you will ensure that you have AT LEAST ONE GAME that will show up in your blog... and your streak will be preserved.
Also, make sure you always log in to Xbox Live BEFORE starting any game. There have been reports that if you log in while inside the game, or if you have your system set to boot directly to the game without loading the dashboard first, it won't capture your game data until the next time you play the game.
So for extra safety, turn on your xbox to the dashboard, THEN launch your game.
Finally, always try to play more than one game. From experience it seems that there is a better chance of your gamer data being captured at Xbox.com when there is more than a single reason to do so.
By following these rules, you should be able to keep your streak going.

If we game past 50 days, say on day 65 I miss a day. Will I lose the 50 day streak badge? I had a 30 day streak badge and lost it on the midnight thing. I think once you earn a badge you should get to keep it, showing what you accomplished in the past. Thanks |

Some badges you keep, but some badges are a notification of your status. The blogs also mention when you achieve a streak... so there is always your blog entry as proof that you did it. The streak badge was never meant to be something you have, but a way of recognizing those who are on a streak.

Well it seems fair that you will let us keep our streak, since we (and you) can't help it we can't play online. I will make sure to play later today so the streak keeps active, too bad I already lost a streak of over 80 days once, just because Real Life prevented me from gamin'!

Well I am sad because I had 100+ days played and messed up. I got on to live and played some bejeweled 2 on Friday Nov 3, 2006 and while in the game I received a chat invite. So I chatted for a short time and then had to get off live because I was going out of town. I forgot to go back to the game and save it, showing that I played on that day. Normally I save all games before accepting invites, not sure why I didn't that day. I lost my streak badge. :(

The streak badges are currently down due to feed issues with Microsoft side. So streak badges are on hold.

You also get online status, surely anyone online at midnight is continuing their streak?

I don't think this service really works if users have to change their usage patterns to use it. |

To take the "snapshot" of data for all gamers in our system currently takes 2.5 hours. We could take multiple snapshots (which we might start doing) which would give us more accuracy but it exponentially increases the complexity of how we handle everything else that we do. We may have to start doing it for a little more accuracy, specifically around the midnight cut off. One idea is to do a capture at 10pm and after midnight and filter out all the duplicates that way we can prevent the situation where a user plays a game over midnight.

We would probably solve this issue using the method I mention above. Yes the presence feed gives us that info, but it is an entirely different feed and has no date information. We could use it as a sort of "pre-filter" but it isn't enough to know you are on... you also have to be playing a game that we otherwise didn't capture. And since the import takes 2.5 hours... what if you start playing an hour after midnight? Maybe the import never reached your gamertag yet... using the presence feed would probably not work.

The Streak badge (all the badges) are just one aspect of the service. It isn't 100% accurate because Microsoft heavily restricts what data we have access to. If we had a direct link into their system, these issues wouldn't exist! We are doing the best with what they give us and trying to do some new and fun/innovative things. It works great for a lot of people that already have certain play habits. For some, it doesn't work so well. We are aware of this, but there isn't a ton we can do.
Hope my answers help!

2 1/2 hours to gather the update? I'm in the UK, so midnight PST is 8am here. That basically means that if I want a streak I shouldn't play between 8am and 10:30am.
Unfortunately I like to play before I go to work in the morning, so I can't make use of this service.
You do have information about what country I'm in, so why not stagger your xml feed reading service. Do the US users at midnight PST, the UK users at 8am PST, French users at 9am and so on.
That way each collection would take a lot less time. |

There is a very real possibility that you can't make use of the STREAK... but you can make use of other aspects of the service. As you can see from your blog, it still catches the games you play, it just won't be as accurate.
Doing multiple pulls is something that is much more complicated than it sounds. We are just now getting to the point where we can maybe do that. If we test it, we will do it with UK first... but there are no guarantees... that are many issues that appear once you start doing multiple pulls.
We will hopefully be offering some other functionality to make streak management much easier since so many people like to attempt them. Look for those announced soon.
