Developer: Capcom
Publisher: Capcom
ESRB Rating: Teen

The demo for Lost Planet was released last May and the time between the demo and the release date shows that a lot more work was put into this game and it shows. Capcom as of late has put out some games that had huge potential but somehow failed to deliver. For example Dead Rising was an incredibly fun game but a very restrictive save feature made it very hard to play at times. It looks like Capcom has got it right with Lost Planet though. You can save at various checkpoints now which is a very good thing since some of the levels are quite long. I believe the second mission where you are going against the Snow Pirate base took me over an hour to finish. The levels are a bit long but thankfully there are checkpoints and these checkpoints can be saved so you can start up a mission where you left off.

The graphics are also incredible. The snow and snow effects all look incredibly real. Almost too real at times because you can't see where you are or where you are going when a lot of wind comes through or an enemy Vital Suit(VS) jumps and lands near you sending a large wave of snow all over the place. The environments in which you play are also stunning. You will battle through large snow fields, wrecked buildings, caves and so on. Each environment looking amazing. You may find yourself being shot at while trying to admire the scenery. Sound is also very well done. From the sounds of trudging through waist deep snow to the wind each sound feels right and fits the game perfectly.

The gameplay is awesome as well. The controls are all well mapped and feel very responsive. The 180 degree turn option is a great feature since it is a third-person game and being able to turn around in a pinch is a necessity. Boss battles are a challenge but are generally straightforward. Also the marker system is a nice touch. When you find a marker pole you are prompted to tap the B button to activate it. Now only does this point in the general direction you are supposed to go it also highlights nearby enemies on your mini-map. Sometimes fighting the same enemies gets a bit repetitive but not to the point of getting bored. Enemies generally don't respawn. The inhabiting aliens known as the Akrid are usually the only respawning enemies I've seen, and that is because they come out of hives that you can destroy to stop their regeneration. I only noticed Snow Pirates respawning during the second boss battle which is understandable to keep the battle intense.

The online multiplayer is also very well done. There are a lot of modes to play and many ways the host can set up a game. The Vital Suits are usable online as well which is a very cool feature. You can do a lot of damage with these if you use them right. The battle gauge system take a little getting used to in online play. When you get a kill it increases. When you are killed it decreases. It is a new twist on the general scoring system found in most online modes for Xbox 360 games. The Lost Planet multiplayer is definitely one of the best currently on the Xbox 360.

Pros:
Great graphics.
Checkpoints and being able to save at them.
Very fun online play.

Cons:
Some missions are a bit on the long side.
Battle gauge takes some getting used to.
Gets somewhat repetitive at times.

Overall Lost Planet is one of the best games to come out on the Xbox 360 and is a good surprise hit to keep players interested during the next few months where not too many interesting games are planned on being released. Lost Planet gets a 5 out of 5.

Quick question. If a game gets repetitive at times, then why does it get a 5 out of 5?

Not trying to be an ass, just wondering.

Just the enemies are mostly the same is all. Not repetitive to where you get bored with it as the review says. Also that one bit is not enough to make it take away from anything else. That is really just a very minor issue. So minor it does not really take away from the game as a whole.
