@Capn Doug
The META-genre has actually been discussed, not at length mind you, but it had been kicked around about how to do it.
So, cool thing is there are others that like the idea, mind you, if it were to be discussed at length and issues with coding and such were figured out. |

No worries, not even really a full idea on my part. But when there is talk of a bottom up rebuild, that is the time to throw out the beginnings of an idea just to see if it is even possible. I'm remarkably fine with the genre system as it is. It may not be perfect, but it has a good balance to it. Then again, I'm thinking that any meta-genre badge would probably be limited to high gamerscore people with some sort of focus. |

I personally like the genre system as-is...even if some of the things (such as Family, Brick, Console Classics, Retro) aren't technically "genres" they're still related groups of games, and the genre badges are much better than the collection badges for really showing the kind of stuff someone plays (as the collection badges are only for having played *every single one*).
If anything needs to be changed, if it bothers people so much...it could be the name. Not sure what it would be called, but if it bothers people SO much that some aren't technically "genres" then...call them something else! No need to change up a system that overall works rather well over semantics. |

I kind of agree with this.
The problem with going to the "proper" gameplay genres is that we would lose genres, not add. We would have a 1st person and 3rd person shooter genre of about 100 games each for example.
Most genres are defined by gameplay, but if we really want to expand to more genres, more things than just gameplay style would have to be part of the criteria.
Believe me, I'm a fan of having more genres over collections and more genres period.
I'm also a fan of double dipping, but that will have to be left in the hands of Fshguy.
Also the 5 star system is coming. |

1st person and 3rd person can be in the same genre.
Tactical Shooter Run&Gun
Are more accurate types of shooter genres, than just 1st versus 3rd, as Ghost Recon and Gears don't exactly play the same. Gears is far closer to Halo, but by just saying 1st/3rd as the split is silly.
While I admit I am not a huge shooter fan, just a quick look seems to indicate at least a third example of a genre (so 3 at a quick look, while we have 4 now, and I am sure more are there) of a Time/Physics Altered Shooter. Things like your Max Paynes and Wanted, Stranglholds and was WET one, too? (Seriously, I don't play a lot of shooter. My highest one is historical, and I am at like 20%, if that...)
Until anyone actually spends the time to look into it, it should not be blown off.

Your Time/Physics shooter would also be known as the Action Shooter which currently has all those games.
But still consolidating the other 3 shooter genres into 2 would still create 2 huge genres. I am not a fan of super sized genres because it sets the bar too high for new gamers. Which is why I want to look into splitting up some more of the genres now. |

Some of these have been a while.
Bioshock 1&2 Crysis 1&2 Timeshift Singularity
All are in SciFi Shooter, but in the three I listed would be Time/Physics Altered, as that is part of the actual gameplay.
While a larger portion of the Action Shooter would be Run&Gun, although, possibly not all, as I have only played a handful. |

Just running down the excel sheet I've started due to this overhaul, some easy new genres stand out to help thin the growing lists: 2D/3D fighter 2D/3D platformer Go Right(I need some work on the side scrolling shooter/brawler titles) Arcade Racing RPG Adventure RPG Shooter RPG Crawler Sim Racing Stratergery/Tactical HnS
But this is also only a partial list as I've not touched a handful of genres because they give me a headache. If anyone is interested in the whole shuffle I've got going, let me know. I can send you what I have so far, and you can form your own or add to it. |

I have not played Sims 3, but why would you say Tropico or Viva Pinata are not strategy games?
They are not war simulation strategy games, like a Halo Wars would be, but they do fall into the strategy umbrella.
You have a form of resource gathering and management. You plan out you available area for development and growth. You ward of hazards and disasters. You earn upgrades and new development tools. You strategically plan your current and future layout and growths to better accomplish your desired outcome.
Honestly, Tropico and Viva Pinata have more in common with Civilization than Civilization does with Halo Wars, and no one would say Civ isn't Strategy.
Also, think of the long history of Strategy games.
Your war sims like Command&Conquer are duly represented.
But the genres has far more examples along the lines of Tropico and Viva Pinata:
Ceasar SimCity Populous Civilization
Just four big ones right off the bat. |

Prey-tell, what exactly does Viva Pinata simulate? What in your real life does it emulate?
Aside from a bad acid trip at Party City, I can't think of any real life activity/occurance that Viva Pinata "Simulates". |
